The ForestNavigator Data Explorer is now live
We are pleased to announce the public launch of the ForestNavigator Data Explorer, the first major component of the ForestNavigator Portal. This initial release provides open access to spatially explicit, high-resolution datasets that support the assessment of forest adaptation and climate mitigation potentials, including data relevant for greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory reporting.
The Data Explorer has been designed to support practitioners, researchers, and policymakers in exploring key indicators of forest status across the European Union and in identifying potential policy priority areas. Users can interactively explore a wide range of forest indicators through maps and graphs, access time-series data and long-term averages, and compare results across EU Member States and NUTS2 regions.
The current set of indicators includes forest aboveground biomass, forest type, forest cover and forest cover change, timber volume, forest fragmentation and fragmentation change, natural forests, disturbance agent, forest disturbance, disturbance fraction and intensity, forest canopy height, and forest cover fraction. Many indicators provide annual data, including change rates, enabling users to analyse trends in forest health and dynamics over time.
All indicator datasets are freely available for download in both .tif and .csv formats, supporting further analysis and reuse. The Data Explorer will continue to be expanded in the coming months with additional indicators.
The ForestNavigator Data Explorer represents the first half of the ForestNavigator Portal. The second component, the Pathways Explorer, is planned for launch in the summer of 2026. It will provide access to modelling outputs developed within the ForestNavigator project, enabling comparisons between the socioeconomic and environmental performance of current EU forest policies and alternative policy pathways. Future outputs will include results from the forest4model Datacube, the European Forests (EUFo) database, and the G4M-X meta-model.
We invite you to explore the ForestNavigator Data Explorer, share it with your colleagues, and help us improve the tool. Your feedback is highly appreciated. We encourage you to sign up for Portal development updates and feedback opportunities and to subscribe to our newsletter to stay informed about upcoming ForestNavigator project updates.

Open letter from the community for the full consideration of Earth Observation in the EU Forest Monitoring Law
Recognizing the increasing pressures on European forests, a community of Earth Observation (EO) experts have issued an open letter for consideration in shaping the Forest Monitoring Law (FML). The law as proposed by the European Commission includes the collection and sharing of timely and comparable forest data obtained through a combination of ground-based measurements and Earth Observation technology.
