ForestNavigator, ForestPaths and PathFinder develop policy pathways to maximise forest contributions to climate neutrality

forestnavigator.eu

forestnavigator.eu

Goal

ForestNavigator uses well-established, high-resolution EU and national modelling along with near real-time data to develop and evaluate policy pathways synergistic for climate, biodiversity and bioeconomy.

Result

The ForestNavigator Policy Modelling Toolbox provides data, models and pathways at both EU and national levels which are accessible through the ForestNavigator Portal, a decision support tool for policymakers and (anyone else) across the EU and within individual countries.

forestpaths.eu

forestpaths.eu

Goal

ForestPaths co-designs, quantifies and evaluates policy pathways for how European forests and the forest-based sector can support achieving climate and biodiversity goals.

Result

ForestPaths delivers policy pathways that are co-designed with stakeholders and quantified and evaluated with next-generation models, tools and data. The policy pathways are to become available on CANOPY – an open-access support platform for European policymakers.

pathfinder-heu.eu

pathfinder-heu.eu

Goal

PathFinder develops a prototype of a European Forest Monitoring System. This will encompass integration of field and remote sensing data, high-resolution mapping and pathfinder-heu.eu reliable estimation, along with a segment for forecasting and pathway assessment.

Result

The PathFinder mapping and estimation platform will serve as a medium for the dissemination of the project’s results. Additionally, the project proposes a governance structure aimed at ensuring the successful implementation of the European Forest Monitoring System.

How are ForestNavigator, ForestPaths and PathFinder working together?

Forests are indispensable for mitigating climate change and preserving biodiversity. As Europe charts the future of its forests, it’s imperative that policies and management practices bolster these essential functions. This mission is at the heart of three Horizon Europe projects: ForestNavigator, ForestPaths, and PathFinder. The three projects are developing complementary policy pathways and platforms to maximise the contribution of forests towards climate neutrality, biodiversity and the bioeconomy through optimised forest management and wood use. Together, they have embarked on a multi-year journey of research and collaboration.

These projects are dedicated to developing comprehensive models that demonstrate forests’ potential in combating climate change and halting biodiversity loss. A key aspect of their work involves pioneering advanced forest monitoring techniques, integrating data from diverse sources. Additionally, they aim to adapt forest management practices to align with environmental targets, thereby contributing to a sustainable bioeconomy. Engaging stakeholders is also a priority; through joint webinars, workshops, and communication campaigns, the projects strive to maximize their outreach and impact.

ForestTalks Seminar Series

This seminar series on forest monitoring and forest-based policy pathways for climate and biodiversity goals is organised by the three sister projects.

A common European forest monitoring system is crucial as it

  • Promotes climate and biodiversity-smart forest management by providing vital data for policy-making
  • Helps evaluate and maximises forests´role in climate change mitigation and aids in biodiversity conservation
  • Safeguards economic interests by monitoring forest resources
  • Assists in disaster prevention through early threat detection and identifyfing adaptation needs
