Second “Forest Talks” Webinar

Navigating EU Forest Policy and Pathways in a Changing World
17 March, 2025, online: 11:00 – 12:30h CET

Enhancing the contribution of forests towards EU climate mitigation targets is instrumental for the transition towards a green and prosperous economy. Achieving economic prosperity in the region is crucial to garner support for policy implementation benefiting the forest sector, the climate and biodiversity targets in the EU Green Deal. However, the fundament of this decarbonization is hampered by recent changes in the geopolitical environment, including the EU and US elections, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and regional polarization.

This webinar aims to:
•    Discuss the potential effects of geopolitical changes and EU forest policy.
•    Discuss how to capture geopolitical changes in forest policy pathways, focusing on their socioeconomic dimensions, drivers, and outputs.
•    Gather input on socioeconomic dimensions relevant for policy solutions aimed at achieving climate, biodiversity, and bioeconomic targets

Speakers include Prof. Sten Nilsson, whose groundbreaking studies on boreal forest policy and global forest sector analysis have advanced sustainable forest management and shaped international forest policy.

Please register to join the webinar and provide input on socioeconomic dimensions relevant for EU policy pathways aimed at achieving climate, biodiversity, and bioeconomic targets.

This seminar series on forest monitoring and forest-based policy pathways for climate and biodiversity goals is organised by ForestNavigator, in collaboration with its sister projects ForestPaths and Pathfinder.

Open letter from the community for the full consideration of Earth Observation in the EU Forest Monitoring Law

Recognizing the increasing pressures on European forests, a community of Earth Observation (EO) experts have issued an open letter for consideration in shaping the Forest Monitoring Law (FML). The law as proposed by the European Commission includes the collection and sharing of timely and comparable forest data obtained through a combination of ground-based measurements and Earth Observation technology.
